Enjoy the Silverdome!

I recently saw a of the San Francisco 49ers' dramatic last-second victory over the Green Bay Packers in a 1998 NFL playoff game. It made me feel sad for Steve Mariucci, onetime offensive coordinator for the best Cal football team in the past two decades -- until this year, I hope -- and a generally likable media presence. But now that I've read this article, my sadness has turned to gladness:

Mr. Bush's first stop was to Republican country, the Upper Peninsula, and his arrival represented the first time a sitting president has visited Marquette since William Howard Taft did so nearly 100 years ago. Mr. Bush drew a rousing reception from a crowd where many people, holding cameras and small children, said they had waited six hours for tickets.

"President Bush, welcome to God's country," Steve Mariucci, coach of the Detroit Lions professional football team, said in the sweltering Superior Dome.

Screw you, Steve, and Bill Walsh too, better known as the San Jose State grad who spent an inordinate amount of time pretending that he went to Stanfurd. Maybe you can persuade the ownership in Detroit to bring Bill in as a shadow figure in the front office. Then you can stink up the NFL together while enjoying all those car-lock-freezing days in "God's country."

Good point, but the NFL's full of republicans. There was an article in today's paper about Mike Ditka maybe getting the Illinois GOP nod for Senate because nobody else wants to run.

Hey, "J" -- which "J" are you? There are so, so many in my life. . .

As for the NFL, there are Republicans wherever there are rich people. But the NFL does seem to lean further in that direction than the NBA. Baseball is less certain.
