And, yes, I realize that our bane is property crime a lot more than person-to-person crime. But still, this can't be good for the tourism industry.

Art and Politics

In light of the discussions that knicolini and I have been having with people about the merits of Lars Von Trier's art, this take on this year's Cannes film festival is interesting. While I generally bridle at criticisms that an artistic judgment has been made for political reasons, I'm inclined to agree with Nigel Andrews here. Then again, a special award for Michael Moore's film wouldn't have had the same worldwide impact as the Palm of Gold. It's interesting that Quentin Tarantino, never known as a "political" director, should now be the ringleader for the politicization of a typically apolitical film festival. Incidentally, I don't think you can fault Mr. Kill Bill for slighting 2046, since he has publicly supported Wong Kar-Wai, not to mention the entire Asian film industry, in the past.
