One thing I didn't mention is that, when I wasn't going through photos, coughing, or eating pie at my parents this weekend, I watched footage of the fight at the Pistons-Pacers game in Detroit hundreds of times. Not many people seem to care that Ron Artest appeared to be using the anger management techniques he was urged to acquire, lying down, out of the fray, until that fan threw a beer in his face. It doesn't excuse what he did, obviously. But I think it's worth noting.

I've always liked the way Ron Artest plays basketball. Same with his "Bad Boy" idols on the Pistons of the 1980s: Rick Mahorn, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman. There's nothing I like better than setting a screen that makes the defender who runs into me stumble backward in a daze. The difference between that sort of play and slugging a fan is huge, obviously. The suspension had to happen, even if the Pacers seem to have been given the short end of Stern's stick. Like I said, though, I've always liked the way Ron Artest plays basketball. If you're at all interested in him, I suggest you read this excellent ESPN: The Magazine story from last year. It's fine sportswriting. Scary good, even.
