When I was visiting my parents in November, I spent lots of time looking at old family photographs that my mother has slowly been organizing into albums. I laid the loose ones out on the bed and studied them for hours. After I returned home to Tucson, I discovered that two of them had gotten mixed up with my papers. This one intrigues me:
It's not that impressive a photograph. I presume that's my grandfather in the distance, but it's impossible to be certain. Although it was surely meant to be a tourist's snapshot, however, the passage of time has given it a gravity that the photographer could scarcely have imagined. The missing parts testify to the fragility of the artifact, making what's left of it seem miraculous.
