I was reading the
Arizona Daily Wildcat this afternoon in the absent-minded way that I reserve for reading that newspaper and came across
a story about how the University of Arizona was planning to shut off the air conditioning to classrooms and dorms in a cost-cutting move. Yes, I got fool'd. But it says a lot about the financial situation of my institution that the story seemed completely believable to me
even after someone had reminded me of today's date. News of a modest increase in College of Humanities spending, by contrast, would have immediately struck me as outlandish. These are not good times for public education.
