The news that Barry Bonds is continuing to work out with childhood friend Greg Anderson, at the center of the BALCO steroid controversy, will surely have many people saying that it's another sign of Bonds's corruptness. Personally, I'm inclined to regard it as another brilliant rhetorical move. Unless the government is able to nail Bonds to the wall with clear proof that he knew he was lying during the grand jury investigation, the real battle is over his reputation. Things look bleak now. But breaking with Anderson would look a hell of a lot worse in my estimation than continuing to train with him as if the investigation were irrelevant. I write this as a huge Bonds fan who wants to see him back on the field, but also as someone who recognizes that the whole scandal is less about sports than it is about posturing.
