Yesterday, when I wanted to call my parents, I dialed the 1-800 number for the calling card we use for long distance without hesitation. I was baffled when I heard those three ascending notes followed by, "You have dialed a number that has been disconnected." I dialed again with the same results. And then I realized that, instead of dialing the calling card number I had actually dialed 1-800-698-8497. That was the number for the switchboard at Bass Tickets' corporate headquarters in Concord, California. I dialed it daily to speak to Kim. But I haven't dialed it in over five years. What causes that sort of mental mix-up? Maybe my unconscious was trying to connect a call.
