I keep looking at the cover to the paperback edition of Edward Said's Orientalism, which has been on top of the stack next to my desk for a few months.

My three most commonest reponses to it are A) to think that I'd really like to see the sights in the Middle East ; B) to get a terrible craving for Middle Eastern food; and C) to wonder how guilty I should feel for sensing that Said's methodology would work just as well for other aesthetically and politically overdetermined words like "punk." Somehow, I don't think any of them are the sort that Said wanted to inspire in his readers.

If that deserved a red card, then Friedrich Hayek was a Communist. And, no, I'm not talking about the elbow to Brian McBride's face.
