We've been listening to the new John Lennon compilation for sale at every Starbucks in the land. It has some strange things on it, together with the biggest hits. And a documentary interlude featuring Sean Lennon singing "With a Little Help From My Friends" for his father, which, despite the fact that it is placed for maximum poignancy, still manages to be maximally pointy. I realized last night, as I was musing on the song "Mother," something that I have known for decades but never registered viscerally, namely the fact that Lennon wasn't even thirty when The Beatles broke up and just a shade over forty when he was murdered. I remember thinking how old he was when I listened to songs from Double Fantasy before he died. Now I realize that he wasn't very old at all.
