I've spent the last few days in a household where technology, especially related to the internet, is a topic of great interest. Most of the people I've seen during my visit have a strong online presence. In spite of these circumstances -- or perhaps because of them -- I have had no burning desire to engage in virtual communication. The pleasure of spending time with friends who have sustained my interest and affection for a great many years is far more important. Because these exchanges usually have an aura of the could-become-work-if-everything-breaks-right about them, though, they also remind me that distance collaboration still tends to come about through proximate conversation. In short, I would have an easier time making the connections I need to make if I lived in a place where I could arrange the kind of meetings where body language is a crucial component.
