An hour ago I felt too numb to move. But after drifting off for a few minutes, I woke to the conviction that the past month demanded that I actively honor my thoughts instead of letting them slip away into the void of a sleep without dreaming. That's why I'm sharing this, an encore cover version that illuminates the genealogy of an artist posted as the ancestor of so many others:
Although I hadn't heard this until a few minutes ago, it mimics the reflections I had while listening to Big Star's first two albums in the dark. It's a teenage love song, one of the best. And yet, in the context of Alex Chilton's passing, it draws attention to a different layer of meaning. Yes, it would be nice if we could spend the night together, even if we are inevitably torn apart.
