The Mayor Who Prefers "Will" To "May"

Here's an interesting profile of New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin. I have been struck by his refusal to make things sound better than they are. Maybe the Bush Administration can hire him as a consultant: the President and his minions could certainly stand to be a little less sanguine in their assessment of the situation in Iraq, don't you think?

I know nothing about him politically, but I have decided that I like Nagin as a person.

Well, he's an African-American Democrat who garnered lots of support from white voters. A Louisiana Barak Obama? I'm reminded of Rudy Giulani, whom I loathed during most of his time in office, but who was a beacon of fortitude after 9/11.

I have to say, hearing that speech on CNN this morning reminded me that there ARE good politicians out there, somewhere in the mess of life, they are there and they are fighting the good fight - against some of the most horrible odds.

I agree completely.
