Every day I look out the kitchen window the sky to the south looks whiter. Clouds are few. I can't seen an inversion layer. But the absence of blue is startling for a place where blue skies are as numerous as Republicans in the petroleum industry. Although I suspect that something is amiss, I'm drawn to that color-drained brilliance. It looks like someone is shining a light through the other side of a two-dimensional landscape. I suppose what unsettles me most is that the intense, diffuse light reminds me of the California coast. This is what the sky looks like on a sunny morning in Santa Cruz or Morro Bay or, on a relatively smogless day, Manhattan Beach. If only the ocean weren't 400+ miles away. . .
