Mr. Castro may have his problems -- little things like resisting democratization of Cuba's political system -- but he can be ever so charming:
Cuban leader Fidel Castro said President Bush appeared "deranged" during his inauguration speech, and he expressed little enthusiasm for renewed diplomatic ties with the European Union.

In comments aired on state-run television late Tuesday, Castro told thousands of teachers attending an international pedagogy conference in Havana that he closely watched Bush's inauguration speech Jan. 20 and saw "the face of a deranged person."

"If only it were just the face," he said, to roars of applause.
If only the observation had less truth to it. . .

I would like to share a photograph I took of a painted cement sculpture of Castro. However, my techtelligence prohibits sharing photos on Livejournal. Also, in my joy of seeing such a humorous statue (outside a clothing store in Georgetown, Grand Cayman), I put my goddamned thumb over the aperture. He was even holding a Pit-Bull by a leash. It, too, was cement.

Points for the description, though. I wish I could see it.

I'll friend you from this account post-class. Don't want to seem like I'm confusing business and pleasure!

I have to admit that sometimes I love Castro.

I really dislike how he is treated by the US sometimes-- as I recall, he was very quick to open up Cuban airspace and airports to the US in the aftermath of the attacks on the WTCs, and I never heard of the US ever saying anything about it. I think that it is time to forget the stupid past differences between the countries (which as I recall were largely the US's fault-- if I remember my history they basically ignored his attempts to create ties with the US, which pushed him to the USSR).

Yes, he has done things wrong, but he, and the Cuban people, deserve better.
