I know I've made a vow to support the Pac-10 conference against all outsiders, because doing so benefits my Cal Bears. But when Stanford loses the first home game at their revamped stadium to Navy by a 37-9 margin, well, let's just say that I have a little more bounce in my step. All together now: "Chop that tree! Chop that tree!"

you know, I feel the same way, and I don't even do the fannish thing with cal and sports. I think that the sheer number of years I spent on the Berkeley campus just bred it into me.

It doesn't go away, does it? There's the Bay Area dimension, too. What Stanford stands for in that context is easy to dislike.
