California Adventure

It may be the wallflower of amusement parks, but Disneyland's neighbor holds powerful appeal for me. Sure, it's patently artificial by the standards of the Pennsylvania where I grew up. But so is California itself. And the park's lack of success actually confers on that artificiality an aura of the authentic. Maybe it is possible to be real and fake at the same time.

Oh, I recognize the speciousness of the distinction. That's why I wrote "by the standards of." What I meant by that is simply that my Pennsylvania is devoid of glitz and glamour. I'm from the Bethlehem area, though, so I'm curious why you think it should be classified as "artificial."

It is a small world after all; I was at Disneyland yesterday too!
