Pan Flash

I mean no disrespect to those of you who work on elaborate web content when I say what I'm about to say. You have to do what people will pay you to do. That said, however, let me take a minute of your time to register how much I hate the sort of Flash-happy content, much of it advertising, that has prevented me from ever seeing the results of the improvements that my ISP supposedly keeps making. In fact, I'm pretty sure that my experience of using the internet is slower than it was five years ago, largely because of those attention-grabbing boxes. I'm not opposed to seeing ads, necessarily. I actually find some of the ones that Gmail turns up highly amusing. What I can't stand, though, are those moments when my computer slows to a crawl because a series of stupid loops has drained it of the capacity to handle the tasks that matter to me. This is why I've made a vow never to purchase anything that I learn about through animated content, Pitchfork-pitched products included.

Oh, it's been so long since I've made a vow of "I will not buy a product that is advertised in this manner..." I used to go so far as to make lists. The last was for "big head people". These consist of two types either a person photographed from above with a fish eye lens, or a person who has been digitally manipulated to appear to have a huge head. The Wayans Brothers (may God have mercy on their souls) made an entire film about themselves as bighead creatures. I've always hated it because the implicit message (to me) is: We think of you as fucking whining infants, please think of yourself as a whining drooling infant as well (or the opposite, inviting you to treat the employees as disobedient, yet cute children who need to be disciplined). I don't want to replay your childhood issues.

Luckily the ban on Carl's Jr. has been easy to maintain. Why don't they do ads where five constructions workers pack into a port-a-johnny shitting and farting on each other?

How may I serve you slavishly today, Master?

I remember your big-head rant with enormous fondness. That's when I first realized that you weren't like 99% of the LJ world.

thanks!

Wow... I only made the top 1%... I don't even merit a .5? That hurts.

I think I would have made it if I had kept my old journal... the one where I had a < 10,000 user number. That made me so much more exclusive!

Sorry if this is obvious, but it looks like it needs to be asked: you have heard of pop-up blockers, haven't you?

[identity profile] cbertsch.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, but that doesn't help with ads that are inset into content frames.

I wish this guy would update his site more often. Pretty funny. What leads people to think that Flash will increase traffic on their sites?

It definitely increases the duration of the visit, though!

It's funny, I scarcely notice it these days... I've got my computer so streamlined, what with firefox and popup blockers and certain scripts disabled...

Also I tend to frequent the same sites over and over, and they tend to not include bullshit. I'm sure that has more to do with it than anything else...
