The San Francisco Police spokesperson who had to discuss yesterday's tiger incident at the "Flesh Hacker" Zoo did a nice job of not going overboard in conjecturing what any of the facility's patrons who might have witnessed it would have felt: "I can only imagine the patrons walking around, and suddenly seeing this tiger," he said. "It was probably surreal." You never know these days what, precisely, is going to be perceived to be merely "real" and what will meet the standard of "surreal."

I think that is how one gets "closure"... which by my count is the only feeling that anyone ever seeks in press conferences. I have always wanted someone in this situation to say, "Well, our son was eaten by a tiger, yes, but at least we have closure. It's bad enough that our son is dead, but you know what would be worse? If we had some hope that he was still alive. Yes... It was gruesome identifying our sons remains, but at least we knew for sure."

True, I suppose. But I'm good at deluding myself into being hopeful when there's little reason to be, hence my preference for uncertainty, which is a boon to the fantasist.

I was employing the other cliche in these situations.

1) Not knowing is the worst thing.
2) Until you've been in my shoes, you can't know.

I hate these cliches. But it is not good form to hate someone whose children have just been eaten by tigers.

Not precisely, but something pretty close. This is one year in which the zoo is not going to have been open 365 days.
