I Could Use a Little Verfremdung Right Now

This hasn't been a good year for me. The sports teams I identify with have had little good fortune. And the player I spent years defending is not even playing right now. Tonight the Suns, whom I've grown fond of, bit the dust. I'm starting to wonder whether my devotion is bound up with a curse, like appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated. At least I can appreciate good play in spite of my allegiances. Although I don't haven any emotional investment in Chris Paul, for example, I can't help but notice that he really is as good as advertised.

I personally believe that rooting for the Suns is the curse--one I chose to opt out of several years ago, after several years of disappointed end-of-season misery.

i predict your luck would change if you put some effort into getting me a new boyfriend - you have to know some academics who forgot to have a personal life but would scrub up well? ideally in the uk, but single and able to write in sentences is a start...
i am not up to travelling yet, but if i get this hole in the heart operation then the sky's the limit.. or the sea, they discovered it helped migraineurs by accident, they were using it for deep sea divers. they put a little umbrella in your heart. i want one.

The Suns were jobbed every which way possible that series. And to say the Spurs are a better team would be a grossly incorrect statement. The Spurs do not play basketball - they've concocted some sick combination of flopping, fouling and whining and are presenting it as basketball.
Seriously, has there ever been a bigger whiner in the history of professional sports than Tim Duncan. That ass spends more time complaining to the refs, with that disgustingly bewildered look plastered on his face, than he does competing on the court. And I thought Kobe was bad...

I can empathize, Bertsch. While the Mountaineers had another strong year on the hardwood, and the Penguins are putting on a vulgar, dominating display in the playoffs, the Pirates erase all of that. There are young Pittsburghers now in puberty who have never known a winning season of Pirate baseball. They have underarm hair, but no memory of postseason baseball.

Perhaps worse than that is the daytime-soap morass that is WVU football. If you are not up on the high drama therein, you may enjoy visiting www.postgazette.com. The Pittsburgh media enjoys the follies of we mountain folk.

Still, while the Pirates remain terrible, having winning teams in a city, whatever the sport, matters. The WVU football saga has been something to behold. But Huggins helps a lot to compensate.
